Five foods you must try if you’re a vegetarian or vegan

Okay so I don’t know if you guys know but I have been a vegetarian for…woah…7 years already? Time flies. Well I wasn’t the strictest vegetarian in the world until I moved in with my roommate who is vegan. So if any of our friends come over they know we will never have meat in the house. Now I am not a vegan and probably never will be because I enjoy real cheese too much, but a lot of what I have been eating and substituting is actually better for me in the long run anyway.

Now don’t get me wrong, you will still find alcohol in our house, I might be a clean eater but I do enjoy the occasional beer or glass of wine…or glass of bourbon. But for the purposes of this post I’m going to be talking about five foods you must try if you are or going vegetarian/vegan and I can personally say from experience that I love these foods.

Gardein Breakfast pockets

Now to be honest, a good majority of Gardein’s products are freaking great. But if you need something quick in the morning and you don’t want to lose out on your protein, these little guys are so delicious. I actually just tried them for the first time after hearing about them from my roommate (who is obsessed with them). They were BOGO at the publix by our house. They are pretty small and my roommate eats a whole box by herself. Four come in a box, and for us semi-normal eaters, two is pretty filling. But if you grabbing and going, pop in in the microwave and head out for the day. It is completely vegan and they are 200 calories each.

Gardein Meatless Beef

Gardein’s Gluten-Free Line of Meatless Products: Ultimate Beefless Ground, Garden Veggie Burger, Chipotle Black Bean Burger (PRNewsFoto/gardein)

Okay so maybe I just really dig this brand but it’s hard not to when they’re vegan (and by the way most of their products if not all are gluten free as well) and taste great! So I just made tacos with this the other day and I have say they tasted amazing. You can make pretty much anything that usually would be made with beef with this product. So shepards pie, lasagna, even chili. Also completely vegan, it is 110 calories per serving.

Lantana Hummus

So this hummus is vegan and come in a variety of ways. Here’s a few: Black Bean, cucumber, Beet, Siricha Carrot, and a couple of other ones. So it’s not your basic hummus like Sabra. Sabra makes their hummus with only chickpeas but in different flavors. Lantana makes their hummus from other really great veggies and the flavor is amazing! Check out my post about pita chips here to see more about what you can eat with hummus.

Delighted by Dessert Hummus

Delighted By

That is actually the name of the brand believe it or not and here is a link to their products. This is such an amazing food. Who would have thought that hummus could become a dessert? Not me, but here it is. Now i have only tried the brownie batter so far but I can tell you that it is amazing. I cannot wait to try the snickerdoodle and the vanilla bean! So this hummus is made with chickpeas and is vegan and gluten free as well. Also it is not made with preservatives. It is 80 calories per serving. It any of them with pita chips, fruit, and maybe even some graham crackers!

Almond Milk

Now I drink both soy and almond milk. I don’t drink milk but that is just personal preference. I hate regular milk, I think it is gross and it is even real milk 90% of the time. Sorry, but it’s the truth. You have to read labels and buy organic if you want real milk and even then I still think it’s gross. SO I sub regular milk out (and creamer for my coffee if I’m feeling it) for soy or almond when I’m using it for maybe my cereal or whatever. Cheese and certain types of yogurts are the reasons why I am not a vegan and they are the only dairy product I eat. If you need milk for cooking purposes then I recommend plain, unflavored almond (even soy if you don’t want the nutty flavor) milk.

So these are just a few of my coveted vegetarian/vegan foods. Now if you want to know where I love getting recipes from then look no further. I love Thug Kitchen. An ex-boyfriend of mine had gotten me their very first cookbook for Christmas a couple years back and I’m about to purchase their other cookbooks. But go check out their site, they aren’t currently sponsoring me but I just really love their stuff!
